Set eligibility and rotation frequency

Start and end dates control when an entry appears in rotation. Visitor targeting can use visitor role, login status, UTM parameters, referrer, or page type. Group display rules can limit visibility to logged-in visitors, selected roles, or specific page types.

Assign each entry a weight from 1 to 10; higher-weight entries appear more often. Frequency controls can prevent the same entry from appearing twice in a row and set cooldown periods between displays. If filtering leaves no eligible entries, fallback content can fill the display.

Place content with a shortcode or widget

Add [random_content] to a post, page, sidebar, or widget area to display a random selection. Add a group ID to draw from a particular set, or use the num_posts parameter to display multiple entries. For example, [random_content group_id="64" num_posts="3"] displays three entries from a group.

Shortcode content normally renders with the page. If full-page caching or a CDN would otherwise keep the same selection visible, the ajax="yes" option loads content after the page loads.

To use the Random Content widget, open Appearance > Widgets, add the widget, choose a group, and set the number of entries. Leave the group empty to draw from all entries. The plugin also uses built-in caching and PHP randomization.

Set up a rotation

  1. Create entries under the Random Content post type.
  2. Create groups under Random Content > Groups and assign entries to them.
  3. Place a shortcode in a post, page, or widget area, or add the Random Content widget.
  4. Configure scheduling, targeting, frequency, weights, display rules, and fallback content as needed.

Random Content Pro is standalone and does not require the free version. If the free version is already installed, deactivate it before activating Pro. Automatic updates deliver features and fixes through the WordPress dashboard.
